Nigerian superstars RemaTems, and Ayra Starr are recognised for the projects they released in 2024.

RollingStone has released its 2024 top albums of the year staff list, reflecting the global rise of Nigerian stars.

Rema’s sophomore album HEIS has made a huge splash, ranking as the highest-charting Nigerian album at number 11. The album’s commercial success was recently topped off with a Grammy nomination for Best Global Album Performance.

RollingStone describes HEIS as a defining moment for Rema’s unique sound, which he refers to as “Afro-rave.” The album draws influences from hip-hop, house, R&B, and dancehall, but the result is something entirely fresh and dynamic. RollingStone notes, “Rema seamlessly blends genres, creating a sonic experience that feels more like a rave than anything he’s done before. It’s buzzy, visceral, and exhilarating music that stands apart from what mainstream Afrobeats is offering.”

Tems’ highly anticipated debut album Born In The Wild comes in at number 37, following her record-breaking Grammy nominations for Best R&B Song and Best Global Album. RollingStone praises the album for its rich, immersive listening experience, offering both emotional and physical comfort. “Tems has already reshaped Nigerian pop in her image. Her debut measures the soul work it’s taken to get here, blending ballads, 90s R&B influences, Afro-dance sounds like amapiano, and hip-hop into a timeless and emotional journey.”

Ayra Starr’s sophomore album The Year I Turned 21 has also been recognized as one of the standout Afrobeats projects of 2024. The album has been celebrated for showcasing her maturity and her global popstar potential. RollingStone describes it as “an album that shows an emotional depth and musical maturity far beyond her years. Ayra refreshes classic Afrobeats elements while blending in the type of lyrical sharpness that fans of artists like SZA will love. Her ability to effortlessly switch between Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba, and English makes this album shine with finesse and attitude.”

The inclusion of Rema, Ayra Starr, and Tems on RollingStone’s top 100 albums of 2024 highlights their growing international stature and the global appeal of Nigerian pop music. In 2023, Asake’s Work of Art, Burna Boy’s I Told Them, Mr. Eazi’s Evil Genius, and Adekunle Gold’s Tequila Ever After also made the prestigious list, further solidifying the global rise of Nigerian artists.
