Davido opens up about how Don Jazzy and D’banj inspired his music career.
In a recent interview on Streetz Studio with Et Cali, Davido revealed that the Nigerian music legends Don Jazzy and D’banj were the driving forces behind his decision to pursue a career in music.
Reflecting on his teenage years in Atlanta, Georgia, Davido shared how, at the age of 14, he had the opportunity to pick up Don Jazzy and D’banj from the airport while hosting the two stars. He recalled taking them around and watching them spend over $20,000 in a nightclub. This lavish lifestyle opened his eyes to the possibility of achieving stardom himself, inspiring him to make the life-changing decision to drop out of school and move back to Lagos.
Earlier, Davido had also mentioned in another interview that D’banj was his first glimpse into the world of Nigerian superstars with global influence. D’banj, one of Africa’s most prominent entertainers, played a pivotal role in popularizing Afrobeats and expanding the international reach of Nigerian music. His hit single “Oliver Twist” was one of the first Nigerian songs to gain significant international recognition, and Davido has often described it as a major source of inspiration.
Davido’s commitment to his craft has paid off, with over a decade of success, making him one of Africa’s biggest musical stars. As a four-time Grammy nominee, he is set to end 2024 on a high note with an upcoming release featuring Odumodublvck and Chike, ahead of his much-anticipated album set for 2025.
